The Volkswagen GTI stands steady to represent the Volkswagen icon and it is the enthusiast version of the Golf compact hatchback, which is one of the best sold cars across the globe. The entire line of hatchbacks started with GTI and it was so popular that it took the entire European market by storm and proved to be an eye-opener for American drivers who have always been better with the soft, slow and domestic offerings which are less agile on road.
On contrary to this, the GTI of Volkswagen Greensboro NC was much more filled with the thrill,p practicality and comfort being within the affordable range. There are multiple cars which are much faster than the GTI, or even some model which are much more spacious than it- but nothing can be more successful than GTI which could easily bring together both the qualities in one confined space. There's the front wheel drive, a comfortable seating capacity of five and plenty of cargo space when the rear seats are completely folded down.
The Mark 4 that came in the market first in 1999, is probably the least desirable in the entire group. The car isn't bad as such, but the regular Golf brought a completely new level of luxury to the entire world of hatchbacks, and luxury and performance didn't go hand in hand for it. When later in 2002, the model was re-furbished, the GLX and GLS variants were dropped from the line and it became a straightforward GTI, who 1.8 liter engine gave 180 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque.
Later when the Mark 5 arrived in the market, the car successfully received the reputation of being a fully restored driver's car. Under this line, the car received the 2.0 liter turbocharged engine that produced 197 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. There was a new transmission available as an alternative to the six speed manual. But that doesn't mean that the drivers control over the gears was completely lost, they can easily choose to select the gear using the lever that was centrally mounted. That allowed the drivers to be more involved with the driving and gave best effect to the transmission world.
With every passing version, there was something new for the Volkswagen GTI, and the quality of the cabin materials just got better than the Japanese cars. But the actual thrill of the car just got better as it got younger.
